Quality of animal products

Over the last decades, the world population has been growing exponentially and  further growth is expected in the coming years. This will lead to a further increase in food consumption and demand for animal protein globally, which highlights the need  for healthy and sustainable solutions to produce enough food to meet the growing demand.

Sustainability of animal products can be improved by increasing productivity, but also by reducing waste and spoilage. Large part of the food produced for human consumption goes to waste, which is an important point of attention when attempting to increase food availability. One strategy to reduce food wastages is to increase quality of animal products, which can contribute to a longer shelf life. Some parameters of quality include drip loss, pH, colour for meat, or for example haugh units for eggs.

Consumers have an increasing demand for a healthy diet, in which the nutritional quality of products, such as level of unsaturated fatty acids or certain minerals, is of great importance. The nutritional quality and biofortification with certain elements, can contribute to a healthier diet and can allow for more efficient consumption of animal protein.

Overall, improving quality of animal products will contribute to more sustainable production of animal products. Feed additives can provide a broad range of nutritional solution to improve quality of animal products such as eggs, milk, fish or meat, and minimize waste or spoilage of food worldwide.
