Organic Acids

Energy sources and antimicrobial capacities in feed, water and digestive tract.

For decades, acidifiers are cost-effective and eco-efficient products to inhibit bacterial growth and mould in feed. Organic acids in feed and water are used for hygiene but also to maintain animal health and increase performance. The use of different acids for their inhibitory effect on micro-organisms in feed and intestinal tract depends on its pKa value. This is one of the explanations why some acids are used as a preservative in feed and others are used to improve animal health and performance. Most organic acids are also a useful source of energy for cells. Butyrate for example, is the energy source for intestinal cells and supports vital intestinal function.
