Clays

Binders of water and toxic substances like ammonia.

Clay minerals are inert raw materials that bind toxic substances and water in the gut. Especially zeolites have a high affinity for binding ammonia. Ammonia is produced when undigested protein is fermented in the large intestine. Ammonia is an unwanted substance which is harmful for intestinal health. It induces diarrhea, footpad lesions and infections. As a result, animal performance is reduced. Also in aquaculture, clay minerals can be included in the diet or directly in the water to reduce ammonia levels and other substances toxic for aquatic species. Using clay minerals for their binding capacities, improves animal health and performance.
