Stable & Effective Probiotic

Calsporin® is a sporeforming probiotic which contains Bacillus velezensis DSM 15544. The inclusion of Bacillus velezensis DSM 15544 in diets for broiler chickens and piglets has shown to improve growth and feed conversion. Bacillus velezensis DSM 15544 (Calsporin®) has several pathways in which it improves gut health. In the gut there is a great amount of bacteria (microflora), both good ones (beneficial bacteria) and negative ones (pathogens like Clostridia, E. Coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter). Bacillus velezensis creates an environment which is positive for the beneficial bacteria in the gut (lactobacilli) by consumption of oxygen, production of enzymes and competitive exclusion. In this way Calsporin® promotes the proliferation of positive gut flora and reduces the pathogenic bacteria. The result is a healthier gut and a healthier gut means a better utilisation of nutrients, less digestive disorders, healthier animals and better performance.

Sporeforming probiotics – high stability

In the past probiotics had the disadvantage of not being stable in process of feed production. Calsporin® has tackled this problem, because it is a so called sporeforming probiotic. The use of sporeforming probiotics has several advantages. When the bacteria turn into spores, it forms two layers of protein around it. These layers protect the bacteria from environmental stressors, which allows sporeforming probiotics to be included in diets containing possible aggressive in-feed components such as coccidiostats. A study at CCL Nutricontrol (The Netherlands) showed compatibility with 14 different products in the ranges of coccidiodiostats, antibiotics and organic acids.

Compared to other probiotics, sporeforming probiotics are very heat stable. A pelleting study performed at CLO (Belgium) showed that Calsporin® can easily be pelleted up to 90°C without reduction of survivability. In several customer trials, pelleting was applied under practical conditions, which confirmed earlier found results. In two cases expansion processes were applied to diets containing Calsporin® with temperatures going up to 105°C and also under these conditions survivability was not influenced.

Results in broilers – proven economic benefits, broad field experience

Calsporin® has been used in animal diets since 1990. First in South and North America and later in Asia and Europe. In the EU Calsporin® has received registration for use in broiler diets in 2006 and since that time it has been used by feed compounders and integrated companies with great succes. A broad range of experiences has been obtained all over Europe. A compilation of practical trials show that the effect that was earlier seen in the registration studies is confirmed in practice:

  • Average effect on Feed Conversion Ratio (FCR1500): -2.3%
  • Average effect on Daily weight gain: +2.5%

Results in piglets – high efficiency, very low cost price

Recently Calsporin® has received registration for piglets on a dosing of minimum 30 ppm. To receive a EU registration a scientific efficacy dossier has to be applied and this is evaluated by the EU. The EU approval confirms the high efficacy of the low 30ppm dosing. Because Calsporin® is highly effective on this relative low dose, Calsporin® has an extremely low cost price per 100kg of feed and is by far the most cost efficient probiotic in the market with a very positive return on investment.

The EU registration dossier for piglets shows:

  • Average effect on Feed Conversion Ratio: -5%
  • Average effect on Daily weight gain: +3.8%
